The three jewels of Indochina - Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia - and Thailand share a common cultural heritage derived from ancient India yet have their own unique character and history. Their borders meet one another's. Vietnam moved away from its Indian-Hindu roots as it absorbed increasingly more Chinese cultural elements. The French ruled Indochina from the mid-19th century to the mid-20th century. French influence still remains in the fading architecture and language, mingling with the cultural influences of China and India. French cuisine competes for excellence with the regional cuisines as strong today as it was yesterday.
